Since the beginning of the 14th century, masu is a wooden cubic container made of Japanese cypress wood used as unit of measure for the trade of rice and soy sauce. For Japanese, the wooden container was as valuable as its content. The tradition is still alive and masu are part of modern Japaneses’ essential items. More recently, it has become a symbol of luck and used to drink the sake on special occasions.

The company Ohashi was created in 1059 in Ogaki city where 80% of Japan masu are produced today. Their masu are well known for the quality of their wood in Japanese cypress called hinoki. This wood is very precious in Japan. With multiple qualities, it has been used from ancient times in architecture for shrines construction or hot spring baths. It has been scientifically proven that its smell contains relaxing and refreshing qualities. As well containing antibacterial properties in its essences which makes it very proper for kitchen utensils too.
